Little progress at Wassenaar export control regime plenary
Article Abstract:
A plenary held in Dec 1998 for the 33 members of the Waasenaar Agreement on arms deals has not been able to achieve a consensus. The aim of Waasenar is to encourage responsibility and transparency over arms sales. Members are encouraged not to sell arms to regions where there is conflict, though there is no ban on exports to these regions. Past decisions which were reaffirmed by members include a pledge not to sell arms to Afghanistan, and to use restraint over sales to African areas where there is conflict.
