Peace Corps expands efforts to interest, attract Black Americans; black volunteers say short-term sacrifice equals long-term gain
Article Abstract:
Misunderstandings about the role and recruitment policy of the Peace Corps need to be cleared up if more blacks are to be encouraged to volunteer. The Peace Corps originally consisted of young ambassadors of goodwill who traveled to developing nations offering aid and technology. Though the organization is funded by the federal government, it is autonomous and not aligned to US foreign policy. Volunteers say that the Peace Corps aims at cultural education and the gaining of new perspectives on American problems.

Black defenders

Black military personnel saw action during all the major conflicts engaged in by the US. Despite being subjected to discrimination, blacks demonstrated exemplary feats of bravery in combat. However, integration in the armed forces occurred only after the end of the Korean War.
