Polarisation and peace
Article Abstract:
Polarization between the Catholic and Protestant communities of Northern Ireland has increased dramatically as a result of the UK's poor handling of events, especially the peace negotiations between Unionists and Republicans. The new UK government due to take office in 1997 must be firmly committed to the peace process or no progress will be possible. Past UK policy was administered by a Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, Patrick Mayhew, who failed to understand the need for a power-sharing political solution. The new Secretary must not be satisfied with simply stopping the violence.

Engaging for a lasting peace
Article Abstract:
Enduring peace in Northern Ireland is dependent upon all parties involved reaching an agreement that is seen as unending by the Unionist and Loyalist parties and as simply a beginning phase by nationalists. UK Prime Minister Tony Blair is taking the same approach to peace as used by former Prime Minister John Major. Involving all of the political parties with a stake in Northern Ireland in the talks and developing trust between them are key steps in creating peace.

Shape of things to come
Article Abstract:
Political developments in Scotland and Wales have not been matched by devolution within England. If the Scottish and Welsh assemblies are a success, English regions such as the North West and Yorkshire will move for similar powers. Power in London will be devolved to a Greater London Assembly and mayor, but that is a city issue.
