Comparing east and south
Article Abstract:
Wide cultural and political differences between Eastern and Southern Europe will influence the process of democratization in the regions. The state socialism in southern Europe is bureaucratic authoritarianism, while Eastern Europe is characterized by an ideology of rapid transformation joined with single-party domination of politics, economics and social life. The armed forces in east are subservient to the Communist party.Eastern Europe, in its socialistic ideology, lacked a bourgeoisie and distributes equal wealth. The value of comparing the regions, along with South America, in drawing conclusions about democratization is discussed.

Strategies and outcomes in Eastern Europe
Article Abstract:
The process of affecting institutional change in Eastern European countries involved certain electoral strategies that induced adaptive behavior in political parties. The differences in the preelectoral scenario and the process of constitutional construction in these countries were responsible for changes in the final institutional framework. Thus only those political institutions were chosen that were suited to the specific economic and social structures and political needs of that country.

Nation-building in the former USSR
Article Abstract:
The 15 new states that came into being after the fall of the USSR in 1991 were not states in the true sense of the word since they have no control over their own frontiers, their borders were not clearly delineated and they did not possess a monopoly of the legitimate use of force within their territories. It would take years before these states can achieve the objectives for which they were instituted.
