Power-trading and the environment
Article Abstract:
A democratic set up that genuinely represents the local needs and is devoid of vested political interests can respond adequately to environmental problems. Power-trading in the political arena makes it difficult to solve environmental problems. The implementation of a true democratic set up calls for the functional distribution of power to a network of communities involved in the issue and a sense of conviction in the proposed issues and actions taken. Ways of achieving faithful representation of local needs and for financing a sound ecological system are discussed.

Anti-nuclear activism in the USSR and its successor states: a surrogate for nationalism?
Article Abstract:
Anti-nuclear activism in the USSR has all but disappeared despite the threat of another nuclear disaster in the soviet successor states. Political analysts say the sudden retreat of public concern on nuclear safety is a political move. They believe that anti-nuclear protests were a surrogate for nationalism, reflecting opposition against USSR's domination over the republics rather than being motivated by environmental concerns. However, with the fall of communism, there is no more need to hide behind a surrogate issue.
