The new WTO dispute settlement system; the impact on the European Community
Article Abstract:
The World Trade Organization's new mechanism for settling trade disputes will present some problems to the European Community. The new mechanism is binding and compulsory, with a strict time schedule. Further refinement is needed in areas of compensation to or retaliation by the EC. The principle of exhaustion of domestic remedies should still be pursued by EC members, and careful attention is needed for harmonization of member law with WTO standards.
