Promoting democracy, peace, and solidarity
Article Abstract:
The Community of Saint Egidio, a lay Catholic non-governmental organization founded in 1968 and based in Rome, Italy, is made up of people who work extremely hard to make solidarity, peace and democracy a reality, both in their own lives and in the world as a whole, according to Pres Andrea Riccardi. Its 15,000 members have lived very close to the poorest people, both in Rome and in other cities, and have discovered a world of misery and isolation. They regard the poor as friends and relatives, and do not regard solidarity as attempting to substitute for public institutions.

Confucianism and democracy
Article Abstract:
Asian mistrust of capitalist democracy in the West is based on the Confucian ideology that values the group over the individual. Social tension and anarchy in the western states, they emphasize, are the product of liberal democracy. The tenets of Confucianism merge society with a state that brooks no resistance to its authority. However, as these countries move toward economic prosperity, political liberalization is inevitable. Confucianism is compatible with democracy in several ways, including educational values, and tolerance of other religions.

The media and democracy: a dialogue
Article Abstract:
Poland newspaper editor Adam Michnik believes that journalism is an art form and that free journalism exists within democracy. Political freedom from communism has not changed the editor's role in a democratic newspaper; that is to fairly report on news from every viewpoint, says Michnik. He believes that European newspapers, unlike American ones, are truly democratic.
