Public apologies as performative redress
Article Abstract:
The growing power of victim groups at the end of the cold war is indicated by the newfound inclination of states to admit their mistakes and issue apologies to both individuals and other states, which is also eagerly awaited by the global public. Such symbolic actions can play an important role in diffusing conflict and promoting a new political order but the work of redress is not complete without legally punishing the perpetrators, providing material compensation and mourning victims with monuments.

Infallible apologies
Article Abstract:
An approximate of hundred apologies are issued by Pope John Paul II to fortify the contemporary relevance of the church and to clear its name than to make amends for the sins committed. The church can never sin according to the Catholic doctrine and hence the forgiveness of the wrong is not solicited and the gesture is only an attempt to fit the Vatican's theological imperatives to the relatively modern and secular convention of state apologies.
