Reforming the postcommunist university
Article Abstract:
The effects of Eastern Europe's transition from socialism to democracy have not been given attention in universities. In this light, an analysis of academic reform in post-communist Eastern Europe is presented. The subject of the analysis was the University of Clug in Transylvania, where government control of the university's operations has raised the issue of academic autonomy. The central government has taken control of student admissions and has the upper hand in decision-making, in terms of teaching staff employment.

The postcommunist wars
Article Abstract:
Changes have occurred in the nature and role of armed forces in the new states and ministates resulting from the disintegration of the Soviet Union and Yugoslavia since 1992. The composition of armed forces in the 11 breakaway ministates suggests that the states emerging from the ruins of Yugoslavia were completely reorganized. Some of those breaking from the Soviet Union have retained the old organized units. Armed forces should make efforts toward isolation from economic life, save for extreme crisis.
