Relief forces in Somalia facing country awash in small arms
Article Abstract:
The UN forces tasked with keeping the peace in war-torn Somalia face a daunting task in a country with a large number of loose firearms. The ouster of Somalian Pres Siad Barre in 1991 allowed the army's large stockpile of US, Russian and European weapons to fall into the hands of several armed groups who have continued to terrorize the country. In addition, arms smugglers have provided a steady supply of small arms for these groups. Although most heavy weapons are already inoperable, gunmen with automatic weapons have ensured the continued anarchy in the nation.

25 nations sign CFE follow-on
Article Abstract:
The NATO member-nations, several members of the former Warsaw Pact and several former Eastern bloc nations have signed an agreement which imposes limits on the number of active personnel they can have in their respective armed forces. The agreement is associated with the 1990 Conventional Armed Forces in Europe Treaty. However, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia and Moldova, all of which have forces deployed in the region, have not signed the agreement.
