Russia: Authoritarianism without authority
Article Abstract:
The formal rejection of the electoral principle came after four years of steadily growing limitations on democracy under President Vladimir Putin in Russia, years after the narrowing of the freedoms to speak and publish, to associate and to be immune from arbitrary searches and seizures, as the actual elimination of 89 elective provinces was a definitive step off the path of democratic consolidation. Putin mused publicly that the country would be able to fight terror better, if errant regional governors were brought more firmly.

Another Russia? After the Leviathan
Article Abstract:
The course of events in Russia and a glimpse into its past holds some hope for establishing democracy in the days to come as President Vladimir Putin has stretched the patience of the people to its limit. It is impossible to say exactly when democracy will come to Russia but experiences of other nations suggest that it will happen when the deficiencies of the current political system begin to reverberate in increasingly more obvious and damaging ways throughout Russia's economy and society.
