The perils of a protracted transition
Article Abstract:
Russia has made some progress towards becoming a liberal democracy. Its current status can be described as electoral democracy. Russia's progress towards full democracy has been protracted due to conflicting political forces, but this indicates that it would be possible to make further progress if individuals could agree to compromise. The country is undergoing a severe economic crisis in the late 1990s and the system has not broken down. However, lack of further progress means the state of democracy would be vulnerable if the economy continues its decline.
