Russian democracy in eclipse: what the polls tell us
Article Abstract:
Some of Russia's politicians and social scientists believe that hopes for a true democratic system have been utterly dashed since the United Russia party, created by Vladimir Putin, had a landslide victory. However, the democratic idea has a foothold, and it depends on the way Putin's government faces the challenges, otherwise a new opening and an opposition revival could ensue.

Article Abstract:
The Putin phenomenon defeated the liberals in the parliamentary elections. However, Putin's autocratic, bureaucratic, and repressive model of modernization may be short-lived, and a new, consolidated democratic movement based on clear, liberal and democratic values would be necessary if Russians bring real democrats to power.

Article Abstract:
President Vladimir Putin and the Kremlin-backed United Russia party won lopsided victories, and this shows the extent to which Russia's elections have become thoroughly institutionalized. However, elections still matter in Russia and it will be more difficult for the consolidation of authoritarianism.
