Security Council urges North Korea to reverse NPT withdrawal decision
Article Abstract:
The UN Security Council Resolution 825, approved 13-0 on May 11, 1993 with China and Pakistan abstaining, asked North Korea not to withdraw from the Non-Proliferation Treaty. Though this resolution is considered hostile to North Korea's sovereignty, there are indications of a proposed stronger resolution with possible sanctions against North Korea if Pyongyang does not reconsider its decision. China is opposed to such measures and advocates direct talks between North Korea, South Korea, the US and the IAEA to end the dispute.

White House formalizes end to fissionable materials production
Article Abstract:
Pres Bush announced that the US would cease all production of plutonium and other fissionable materials for use in nuclear weapons as part of his 'nonproliferation initiative.' The initiative was supposed to define general principles which would guide nonproliferation efforts. Critics pointed out that the policy statement lacked new proposals and only codified ongoing activities. In addition, critics also said that the US has long ceased production of such fissionable materials.
