Shades of Althusser: the logic of theoretical retreat in contemporary radical criticism
Article Abstract:
Louis Althusser's influence is an important reason for the theatrical retreat in contemporary radical criticism. Contemporary Marxist cultural theorists, such as Fredric Jameson, separate culture from its historical and social contexts. Such an attitude attributes to culture a distinct authority to decide, according to its needs, the basis of history and society. Thus culture becomes a dominant factor in determining its material relationship with history and society. Althusser advanced such a philosophy to legitimize Joseph Stalin's and Nikita Khrushchev's version of socialism.
