Sixty years after the Nazi-Soviet Pact
Article Abstract:
Intense discussion about depictions of the past followed the demise of communist rule in Russian in 1991. A school of thought in history books in the Soviet Union and abroad has followed the conventional line that Stalin's military policy was mainly defensist from 1939 until the germany invasion of the Soviet Union in 1941. This is contrasted by claims the policy was offensist and that Stalin was plotting an offensive war of his own. A review of the history books finds that Communist propaganda about policies under Lenin and Stalin has been purged, although some remains.
