Sustainability East of the Rhine
Article Abstract:
The European Spatial Development Process (ESDP) goes beyond the European Union (EU), encompassing Europe as a whole. The ESDP is dealt with in 'Sustainable Development for Central and Eastern Europe', a collection of works by 21 contributors and edited by Ulrich Graute. Graute spurns simple answers. He calls for greater debate on these issues, as well as the setting up of a infrastructures for policy-making, and a research strategy covering Europe as a whole. This book is recommended for anyone involved in regional development policy networks.

The Global Environment Facility: an institutional innovation in need of guidance?
Article Abstract:
The Global Environment Facility is a consortium of environmental organizations that seeks to raise and provide funds for global environmental projects that are in line with the principle of sustainable economic development. However, the organization has been beset by problems of too many varying aspirations and incompatible tasks. In particular, its environmental efforts have been thwarted by the lack of consensus on the definition of terms such as capacity-building, participation, global environment benefit and sustainable development.

NGOs and the Global Environmental Facility: friendly foes?
Article Abstract:
There are a number of issues involved in the relationship between the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and NGOs. These include why and how NGOs access GEF policy and funds, how these funds are used and how people in the global environmental epistemic community maintain GEF as a development of shared value. NGOs put pressure on GEF to service their values, and this fosters complex inter-relationships. There is potential for GEF to become increasingly useful if it survives.
