Syria: not so inscrutable
Article Abstract:
Syria may be sincere about its desire to conduct peace negotiations with Israel. The United States should continue to act as a diplomatic broker between the two countries. Some of Syrian president Hafez al-Assad's reluctance to solidify a peace agreement may stem from his inherent distrust of Israel, his dislike of Israel's demands, and a lack of economic incentive. A Syrian peace agreement may fall short of Israeli or American expectations.
