Burma's uneven struggle
Article Abstract:
Burma's pro-democracy forces have been struggling since 1962, when the military took over the reins of government and discarded the liberal-democratic constitution, to restore democracy to the country. However, until 1988, many of these groups waged separate struggles against the authoritarian regime. Following the coup that year that saw a military junta overthrow the military-backed Burma Socialist Program Party, activists began taking a united stand against the excesses of the country's military leaders.
