Taking the helm of the NAACP: the ever-ready Evers-Williams
Article Abstract:
Myrlie Evers-Williams, the new chairwoman of NAACP, is a known civil rights activist whose husband was killed by a white supremacist. The lady whose 30-year fight saw the killer being punished is a determined person. She resolves to attain the goals of NAACP with the the help of its branches and members. Her priority will be to save affirmative action from being scrapped and to keep up the fight for poor people specially African-Americans. Although NAACP is faced with internal problems that are mainly financial, she hopes to succeed with the broad-based support within and outside the organization.

Kweisi Mfume: a man with a very new mission

Maryland Democratic Rep. Kweisi Mfume promises to initiate reforms and reinvigorate the NAACP as he assumes his new position as the organization's president and chief executive officer in mid-February 1996. Mfume is known for his integrity and honesty, and his vision and enthusiasm helped in making him the most suitable choice among the 200 candidates. He intends to focus his efforts on NAACP's fiscal integrity, organizational efficiency, and strengthened communication between the national office and its branches.
