The 2005 Freedom House Survey: Progress in the Middle East
Article Abstract:
Lebanon , a Middle Eastern country, showed sufficient progress to warrant an improvement in its freedom designation from Not Free to Partly Free and the Palestinian Authority registered a similar gain and smaller improvements were registered by Iraq, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait. In addition to the gains registered in the Arab world, a study showed important improvements in two majority-Muslim countries in Asia - Indonesia and Afghanistan and also in Muslim-African country - Mauritania.

The 2004 freedom house survey: Worrisome signs, modest shifts
Article Abstract:
Progress in the Muslim-majority countries is complemented by mass mobilization for democracy and freedom in Ukraine. The findings of Freedom in the World 2005, the index of world political rights and civil liberties, indicate only moderate shifts in freedom on a global scale where 119 countries qualify as electoral democracies, two more than in 2003.

Gains offset losses
Article Abstract:
Results from the annual Freedom House survey are presented, which measure gains and losses in worldwide democratic polity. Successes include the elections of presidents in Mexico, Yugoslavia and Croatia; failures include outbreaks of ethnic conflict in the Pacific, continuing strife between Palestinians and Israelis, and reform setbacks in Iran.
