The ADEA and its exemptions on the mandatory retirement provisions for firefighters
Article Abstract:
The Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967 was legislated to protect older workers from unfair treatment in terms of hiring, job retention and compensation. However, one exception to this law are jobs for which age is a job qualification. Under this provision, retirement is mandatory for public safety personnel such as fire fighters, given the physical and mental requirements of their work. The impact of the elimination of mandatory retirement on personnel policies is examined in a municipal fire department. The results indicate the need to re-evaluate job requirements and measures.

Aging and work performance
Article Abstract:
The aging of the American workforce has raised concerns of lower labor productivity due to stereotypes of older workers as less productive and more expensive employees. However, a comprehensive review of existing research on the relationship between age and productivity shows this to be a myth. Given the realities of workforce demographics, efforts must be made to better integrate the aged into the job environment. Such employees should be judged by performance rather than age and should be encouraged to work beyond retirement age through the redesign of jobs and training programs.

Human resource management's role in the future aging of the workforce
Article Abstract:
The aging of the American workforce is a major issue confronting US policymakers. This is particularly true for the public sector, which has a workforce that is generally older than that of the private sector. Related issues include changes in retirement systems, problems of age discrimination and inadequate work training programs for the aged. Human resource managers should pioneer the development of policies and tools, including job analysis, job restructuring and career development systems, to address these issues.
