The Asian spectrum
Article Abstract:
Democracy in Southeast Asian nations is not firmly rooted, though the process of democratization has been initialized in varying degrees in South Korea, Taiwan and the Philippines, due to low political participation of the citizens. Countries such as China, Vietnam, Burma and Indonesia continue to challenge the universality of the democratic ideal, though the political condition in these countries has improved. While the need for economic development has resulted in the initialization of the democratic process, the military in these countries has slowed the process.

Between Africa's extremes
Article Abstract:
The neglect of the basic tenets of liberal governance and undue importance to multi-party elections have led to the growth of large number of unstable regimes in sub-Saharan Africa. However, hope for democracy is provided by the politically committed and well-educated members of civic and opposition groups which believe in Africa's capacity for better government. The future will not be bleak if courageous leaders rise to the challenge of harnessing fresh ideas to policy evolution.

Redemocratization in Chile
Article Abstract:
Chile's democratically elected government in 1990 did not inherit an economic crisis from the earlier military government unlike other Latin American countries. In Dec 1993, a new coalition government led by the Christian Democrats was elected. The government is, however, hampered by lingering doubts of authoritarianism, fuelled by persisting authoritarian enclaves. Solving the problems that are natural to transitional processes will help to democratize Chile successfully.
