The Russian Far East as a factor in Russian-Chinese relations
Article Abstract:
Russian and China face many challenges in managing changing geopolitical forces occurring in the Russian Far East. Russia's current military and economic weaknesses and lack of coherent policy toward the region makes its leaders fear Chinese incursion. China, however, is keeping a policy of accommodation with Russia. Regional elites have assumed more power and are seeking more autonomy, but not independence. The US needs to encourage cooperation and dialogue between Russia and China and with neighboring ASEAN countries.
