The challenge of destroying chemical weapons
Article Abstract:
The task of destroying chemical weapons stockpiles poses a serious challenge because of the difficult and costly destruction procedures. The US, which has an estimated accumulation of three million chemical weapons, uses the general high-temperature incineration method for destruction of chemical agents and munitions. Meanwhile, strong opposition from state governments has forced the US Army to shift incinerators to scarcely populated areas, and adopt new methods of chemical weapons disposal, such as cryofracture and neutralization techniques.

Nuclear weapons in Ukraine: hollow threat, wasting asset
Article Abstract:
The Ukrainians are discussing alternative security options and have postponed ratification of START 1 and START 2 and the May 1992 Lisbon Protocol. It will temporarily keep some nuclear weapons on its territory. This has caused concern about Kiev's commitments to becoming a non-nuclear weapon state. Possible reasons for postponement are that the Ukrainians are seeking cash compensation, and security guarantees, and concessions from Russia, or that they mean to retain some nuclear weapons as security.

Management and disposition of excess weapons plutonium: reactor-related options
Article Abstract:
The National Academy of Sciences recommends using surplus weapons plutonium (WPu) as fuel in power reactors or vitrifying it with spent fuel in glass. According to a report prepared by the academy, both methods should be implemented simultaneously, after an Environmental Impact Statement for the two options has been approved. It is important that similar steps be taken in Russia for the disposal of surplus WPu.
