The future U.S. defense industry: smaller markets, bigger companies, and closed doors
Article Abstract:
Increasing trends toward defense conversion is likely to commercialize and transform the US defense industry into a two tiered structure based on open world markets and a closed, autarkic market. Small and medium-sized contractors show enthusiasm to convert, diversify and enter the commercial markets, while large contractors focus more on downsizing and consolidation. Such trends toward defense conversion will reduce international defense cooperation involving the US, and restrict defense globalization to small and medium contractors dealing in subsystems and components.

In defense of the credit bureau
Article Abstract:
Credit bureau are beneficial to the consumer using credit responsibly, because they offer incentives for consumers to change their behavior, operate as a locus of information and disseminate information to members, while rewarding moral actions. The Consumers Union and Ralph Nader's US Public Interest Research Group reports are replete with flimsy techniques and explicit exaggeration. The Arthur Anderson and Co study, commissioned by the Associated Credit Bureaus in June 1991, reveals that the accusation of consumer groups are baseless and that grave mistakes are rare.

Self-defense, justification, and excuse
Article Abstract:
A criticism of Judith Thompson's view expressed in her paper on self-defense is presented. These include: villainous aggressor, innocent aggressor, innocent threat, substitution-of-a-bystander, use-of-a-bystander, and riding-roughshod-over-a-bystander. An analysis of these scenarios leads to ideas which vary from Thompson's original treatment. It is stressed that moral theories should consider number of deaths, relative moral fault, fair allocation of risks and incentives, and nonappropriation of others.
