The greening of participatory democracy: a reconsideration of theory
Article Abstract:
The theory of participatory democracy that can contribute more positively toward environmental issues than traditional liberal representative democracies. New Zealand's experimentation with participatory democracy raises questions of ecological rationality, community diversity, and the impact of economic liberalism for improving environmental management. Environmental decision-making with regard to sustainable development encounters many complex problems. Public deliberation involving collective reasoning can effectively solve these problems by the capitalism dominant in New Zealand prevents a participatory democracy from forming.

An analysis of New Zealand fisheries policy reveals that some regard the fisheries policy as enviable while others regard it as a continuation of failed management systems that ignore ecological realities. Critics point to inequity, high-grading, observer coverage and public consultation procedures as areas of concern aside from licensing procedures for marine recreational fishers and aquaculture.

Sustainable management and the pastoral ideal
Article Abstract:
Detailed analysis of New Zealand's sustainable management of natural and physical resources laws shows that the 1991 legislation emphasizes pastoral land use. The legislation fails to accommodate socio-economic issues specified in the United Nations Conference for Environment and Development Agenda 21 and provides little guidance on land ownership.
