The march of equality
Article Abstract:
Alexis de Tocqueville is not mainly known as a philosopher of history. However, the Introduction to his 'Democracy in America' can be seen as containing a very strong statement about human history and its unceasing progress towards democracy. Tocqueville believes that the hand of God is the force pushing mankind towards higher levels of equality and democracy. Indeed, the Christian religion plays a very significant role in his assessment of democracy's expansion. It is clear that Tocqueville has a theory of history that goes a long way beyond the claim that the march of democracy is providential.

Women, equality, and the family
Article Abstract:
Alexis de Tocqueville clearly attempted to find an appropriate language in which to present the social reality of fathers, mothers and children. He was aware that much thinking about families takes place through political categories, imagery and metaphors. He also identified the changing relationships between the domestic and the political in the US during the 1830s. He regarded women as not only participating in general democratic activity, but also acting as a driving force. He believed that domestic institutions mesh with or reflect the larger political and civic order.
