The people triumph
Article Abstract:
This article discusses the removal of Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori on charges of corruption; this arose from his relationship with Vladimiro Montesinos, a former CIA employee, who Fujimori had appointed as head of the National Intelligence Service, and who wielded power over the government and military through blackmail and who was caught on video saying he had rigged the latest election in favor of Fujimori. Demonstrations in Peru were considered a leading cause in the presidents resignation in November 2000; Valentin Paniagua replaced him until a new election could be held; public opinion implies that the people do not like any of the candidates and want a new leader, possibly: Alejandro Toledo, an Indian-Latino economist who had worked for the World Bank and supports a third way policy similar to that of Tony Blair; Jorge Santistevan, a lawyer who had worked for the United Nations; or former Vice-President and Foreign Minister Francisco Tudela.
