The politics of safety nets
Article Abstract:
The period of economic transition of a state is very crucial for its citizens, particularly the low income groups. The supporters of orthodox reforms have suggested safety-net programs that encourage the involvement of the poor in the reform process. Those in favor of poverty-alleviation programs, however, propose major structural changes or reallocation of ownership and assets.

Romania's politics of dejection
Article Abstract:
Romanian elections in 2000 demonstrated how citizens have become apathetic toward the centrist government in control since 1996. This lack of response, however, should not be seen as disinterest in a democratic agenda.
