Article Abstract:
President Bill Clinton, on August 11, 1995, stated that the US will seek a total ban on nuclear tests in lines with the comprehensive test ban treaty (CTB), currently negotiated at Geneva despite opposition from the Pentagon. The decision is influenced by a report by the JASON committee, comprising of independent scientific advisors to the government on security issues. The president has called upon Russia, China and France for adopting the same stance. The American Congress and media have welcomed the decision.
