War in the Caucasus?
Article Abstract:
Georgia declared itself an independent state in Apr 1991 and the political situation there and in Transcaucasia generally remains volatile. Georgian minorities, comprising 30% of the republic's population, feel threatened by growing nationalism. Other North Caucasian minorities have rallied to the support of the embattled Abkhazians in Georgia and the Russian Federation has begun to fear a Caucasian war if the conflict continues. Western countries have been leery of criticizing Georgian oppression due to friendly feelings for Eduard Shevardnadze left over from his days as Russian foreign minister.
