Who 'CoPed' out at Kyoto? An assessment of the Third Conference of the Parties to the Framework Convention on Climate Change
Article Abstract:
Many disputes were still unresolved as the Third Conference of the Parties to the Framework Convention on Climate Change took place in Kyoto, Japan, and this made it unlikely that firm conclusions would be reached. In particular, the Kyoto conference was the forum for the latest developments in the conflict between the European Union and the US over how the European Union fulfills its commitments under the Convention. Some compromises were reached at the conference, but all the big conflicts over climate change remain unresolved.

Negotiating the 'Berlin Mandate': reflections on the first 'Conference of the Parties' to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change
Article Abstract:
The Conference of the Parties (COP) to the UN Framework Conventions on Climate Change held in Berlin, Germany has failed to continue the success of the Rio 'Earth Summit.' Instead of focusing establishing new targets for the stabilization or reduction of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases, delegates to COP complained about the economy rather than pursue issues concerning global climate change. Unlike the Earth Summit, which signed two UN conventions, no binding agreements were reached in Berlin.

Kyoto and the insurance industry: an insider's perspective
Article Abstract:
The protocol agreed at the climate change conference in Kyoto, Japan, will be an extremely significant piece of international law. It will limit the growth and flow in carbon fuels worldwide, and will therefore be able to control world trade as a whole. Climate change is a very important issue for insurers and reinsurers, and they wish to raise general awareness of this issue. Work in this area will include more detailed research projects investigating the impacts of windstorm and floods.
