Zambia: boom, doom or merely gloom?
Article Abstract:
The economic outlook for Zambia seems bad at least until after the 1996 elections but democracy, although fragile, still obtains. Zambia may have trouble convincing the international community that it intends the 1996 elections to be fully democratic. The country is heavily reliant on the donor community, and both the business and donor communities are aware of corruption in government. The withholding of aid would force Zambia to renege significantly on its servicing of the international debt. Other economic problems have grown worse during the past regime and much effort will be needed to make things better.

Confounding the prophets of doom
Article Abstract:
Experts were predicting another civil war in Nigeria in 1998, but when the country's dictator, General Sani Abacha, died in June, the promise of democracy was reborn. The country's interim leader, General Abdulsalam Abubakar, has required political parties to obtain membership from across the country, which has led to some constructive coalitions. Former head of state General Olusegun Obasanjo could win the election, but his political ties to northern power brokers and generals might jeopardize his image with the electorate.

Zambia and the winds of change
Article Abstract:
Zambian President Kenneth Kaunda was defeated by Frederick Chiluba in Nov 1991. This was Zambia's first multiparty election since 1968. The defeat of Kaunda was the result of the Constitution of Zambia Amendment Bill of Nov 1990, which led to the formation of Chiluba's Movement for Multiparty Democracy, the National Democratic Alliance and the Democratic Party. These changes have led to the new possibilities for freedom of expression and tolerance in Zambia.
