A multicenter evaluation of a proprietary weight loss program for the treatment of marked obesity: a five-year follow-up
Article Abstract:
The Sandoz Nutrition Co's OPTIFAST weight reduction program was evaluated using the new evaluation criteria proposed by the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences. The new criteria recommend the redefinition of successful long-term weight loss as the loss of 5% or more of the initial weight and the maintenance of this loss not less than a year. The findings indicated that the combination of a weight-reduction program involving very-low-calorie diets, which was incorporated in the OPTIFAST program, and lifestyle modification resulted in long-term weight control for many of the patients.

Nourishing the body through use of process prescriptions in group therapy
Article Abstract:
The use of between-session prescriptions which sustain and boost the momentum of change that transpire in group therapy for eating disorders was described. The model utilizes words and phrases that depict the group as a body to guide the therapy process and develop between-session prescriptions. It allows group members to participate directly in the development of the treatment experience, thereby encouraging them to commit to a developmental process that makes them accountable and caring for their bodies.

Well-being and morbid obesity in women: a controlled therapy evaluation
Article Abstract:
The cognitive group treatment (CT) program was evaluated in terms of its relative effectiveness in promoting orderly eating, weight loss, regular exercise and psychological well-being among morbidly obese individuals. Eighteen obese women were assigned to the CT program, 19 were assigned to a behavior therapy weight loss program and 13 were assigned to a wait-list control group. Unlike the two other groups, the CT group reported markedly decreased depression, anxiety and eating-related psychopathology.
