A time of epistemic transformation and responsibility
Article Abstract:
The book entitled 'Ethnography and Human Development: Context and Meaning in Social Inquiry' deals with issues of epistemology and method. The book provides extensive and interesting discussions on the epistemological status of several ethnographic methods and on the appropriate epistemology for the various social sciences. The book emphasizes the importance of paradigms in the study of human development, of time-extended units of analysis, of distributed knowledge in analyzing development in societal context and of the complementarity of methods relying on ethnographic and linguistic analyses and on cultural discourses.

The meaning of independence and responsibility
Article Abstract:
Jeffrey Jensen Arnett's essay examined various conceptions on the transition to adulthood using ethnographic, historical and sociological data. He emphasized the individualistic traits which characterize perceptions on adulthood which include self-responsibility, making independent decisions and becoming financially independent. However, the meaning of these character traits is not yet established adequately. Thus, there is a need for a detailed study of the labeling and behavioral definition of the valued characteristics of the stages of development identified by individuals.

The social criteria of adulthood
Article Abstract:
Jeffrey Jensen Arnett claimed that transition to adulthood depends on self-responsibility, independence in decision-making and financial independence. He believed that marriage and other comparable markers of transition are no longer applicable. It is argued that marriage is still a sufficient but not necessary criterion for social adulthood. Other criteria such as separate residence and full-time occupation are applicable in much broader terms.
