Adolescent depression: Social network and family climate - A case-control study
Article Abstract:
Social network in depressed adolescents, with and without comorbid conduct disorder was investigated and compared to social network in nondepressed controls. The aim was to determine whether depressed youths have a more restricted and lacking social network, and whether they see the emotional climate within their family of origin as more negative. No difference was found between adolescents with an episode of major depression and healthy controls. However dysthymic adolescents have social interaction which is less satisfying, and a more negative family climate. Social interaction is poor when depression is combined with conduct disorder.

Practitioner review: the pharmacotherapy of adolescent depression
Article Abstract:
Psychotherapy is an important tool in the treatment of adolescent depression, which is a serious disorder affecting up to 8% of the teenage population. However, many professionals also use pharmacotherapy. Research has indicated that tricyclic anti-depressants are not useful in treating adolescent depression, but that the serotonin selective re-uptake inhibitors have value. Prescribing of these drugs will include assessment using a full medical and psychiatric history, monitoring over a treatment period of up to 12 weeks and evaluation of the outcome. Clinicians may also consider long-term therapy.

PATHOS: a screening instrument for adolescent overdose: A research note
Article Abstract:
PATHOS is a concurrently valid screening instrument for identifying high-risk adolescents with overdose-related depression, hopelessness, premeditation, and suicidal intent. It can predict a high-risk group with 100% sensitivity, 57% specificity, and low false positive rate. These results prove that PATHOS is an important aid for non-psychiatric assessment. However, over-reliance on PATHOS for excluding not-high-risk adolescents is dangerous.
