Are average facial configurations attractive only because of their symmetry?
Article Abstract:
Two experiments were conducted to examine the hypothesis that the attractiveness of average facial configurations could be attributed solely to associated alterations in symmetry. The predictions that averageness should not account for significant variance in attractiveness ratings when symmetry is partialed out and that changes in attractiveness should disappear when images are made perfectly symmetric were investigated. Results indicate that facial averageness is attractive and that symmetry hypothesis should be ruled out.

Averageness, exaggeration, and facial attractiveness
Article Abstract:
Faces with average features are generally more attractive than faces with distinctive features. Line drawing composites that eliminate artifacts due to smoothing or blurring and avoid problems related to gray-level composites are more attractive due to their averageness. The composite faces are regarded as more attractive than the component faces used in their creation. The preference of very young infants and adults for the same faces indicates a biological basis for attractiveness.

The Simon then Garfunkel effect: semantic priming, sensitivity, and the modularity of face recognition
Article Abstract:
A study exploring semantic priming, sensitivity and the modularity of face recognition was conducted on 254 subjects in five experiments using a face recognition task of famous and nonfamous people. Results indicate that semantic priming affects sensitivity and bias in face recognition. The modularity theory is adversely affected by the results since encapsulation of the face module according to the theory is not effected.
