Body image and steroid use in male bodybuilders
Article Abstract:
The relationship between body image and eating-related behavior was studied using 43 male bodybuilders and two athletic comparison groups, 48 runners and 48 martial artists. Whether steroid use related to body image disturbances was also examined. Bodybuilders showed higher body dissatisfaction, a high drive for bulk and thinness and increased bulimic tendencies compared to the other two athletic groups. Body builders reported liberal attitudes toward the use of both steroids and anabolic steroids and used them mainly to improve looks. This survey suggests that bodybuilders are more vulnerable to body image disturbance and other psychopathological traits which have been commonly reported with eating disorder patients.

The effects of the ideal of female beauty on mood and body satisfaction
Article Abstract:
A study looked at the links between exposure to the ideal image of female beauty in western culture, and body dissatisfaction, disordered eating and mood. Media images of the ideal of female beauty were found to have an immediate effect on the mood, supporting the findings that the images have a detrimental effect and may play a part in binge eating. The study is limited as the sample was essentially nonclinical.
