Bulimia: a historical outline
Article Abstract:
A historical review reveals the origin of bulimia, and the changes in its definitions, etiology and symptomatology. The existence of bulimia can be traced back to ancient times. Bulimia has exhibited multiple manifestations in its historical course. Bulimia has evolved from being identified as a monosymptomatic eating disorder to a polymorphous disorder. Bulimia's association with the concept of kynorexia, which has a similar clinical picture, has undergone changes.

Were the Roman emperors Claudius and Vitellius bulimic?
Article Abstract:
Greek emperors Claudius and Vitellius are identified from Roman literature as historical bulimic variants. They are the earliest historical persons known to have been involved in binging and vomiting. However, they differ from the patients of bulimia nervosa by an absence of Russel's characteristic psychopathology. Bulimia nervosa affects women more than men, and the possibility of Vitellius and Claudius having a morbid fear of obesity is unlikely.
