Child psychiatry fellowship training: a crisis in recruitment and manpower
Article Abstract:
Despite a predicted surplus of physicians graduating by 1990, there is concern over the shortage of child psychiatrists, as well as the quality of child psychiatry training programs. Almost one third of graduates who take the child psychiatry board exams do not pass. It has been suggested that this field impedes its progress by isolating itself from general psychiatry and other medical areas, while neglecting faculty development. A survey of all accredited child psychiatry training programs in the United States was done and 83 percent (104 out of 126) of the program directors responded to the survey. Recruiting child psychiatry fellows was the most frequently cited problem, followed by difficulties of faculty recruitment and development. Many residents who plan to be child psychiatrists initially change their minds sometime during their training. This may be due to a late introduction of child psychiatric theory and work, which may come too late to kindle and nurture interest and commitment. The authors suggest that exposure to child psychiatry practice should occur early in the residency program and those with an interest should be given child psychiatrists as mentors and supervisors throughout their training. Another positive influence would be exposure to the developmental perspective which child psychiatrists can provide to assist in the understanding and treatment of adult patients. Child psychiatry needs to develop a closer relationship with general psychiatry and other medical specialties. Many more suggestions are made on how to develop stronger faculty and curricula and stimulate interest in this field. (Consumer Summary produced by Reliance Medical Information, Inc.)

Child psychiatry comes of age: growing sophistication, evolving strategies
Article Abstract:
Child psychiatry has been known to the modern research field because of psychopharmacology. Since investigators have been conducting studies and research about the complex use of drugs for children, greater attention is placed on improving and understanding the practice of pediatric psychopharmacology. More studies about the field are being undertaken and more changes are still being observed.
