Culture-general and culture-specific factors in the discrimination of melodies
Article Abstract:
The effects of a culture-general factor, pattern redundancy, on 5-tone melody discrimination, differing from Western tonal conventions, were examined. The ability of nine month old infants to differentiate standard melodies from altered comparisons was studied and it was found that musical conventionality had not effect. In the case of five year old children and musically untrained adults, the children's performance was enhanced by the redundancy of standard melodies although the effect was greater for conventional contexts, while adults's performance was facilitated by the redundancy of standard melodies in conventional contexts.
