Developmental outcome of infants born with biological and psychosocial risks
Article Abstract:
Researchers undertook a longitudinal study to examine developmental outcomes in children whose birth circumstances indicated a higher risk of developmental problems. The risk factors were the children's psychosocial circumstances and complications which occurred during pregnancy or at birth. The researchers assessed the cognitive, motor and social-emotional functioning of 350 children at the ages of three months, two years and 4.5 years. They found that all the children had developmental delays, that those with adverse psychosocial factors had more problems, and that the effects of psychosocial and biological risk were additive.
