Discussion of "Substance use reduction in the context of outpatient psychiatric treatment." (commentary on an article published in this issue)
Article Abstract:
Dr. Kate Carey described a collaborative, motivational, harm reduction approach in the treatment of substance abuse disorders in persons having mental health problems. She suggested that knowledge of the stages of change helps in properly designing a program that would be best suited to treat dual diagnosis patients. However, Carey did not explore much on the application of her clinical strategies to the complexity of the engagement process. She also did not explain how her techniques relate to the resolution of substance abuse disorders in dual diagnosis patients.

PTSD and community-based treatment: a commentary on "PTSD Diagnosis and Treatment for Mental Health Clinicians." (response to article by Matthew J. Friedman, this issue, p. 173)
Article Abstract:
Matthew J. Friedman provided a concise overview of current diagnosis and treatment procedures for patients suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Caregivers, however, must take moves to address the needs of mentally ill patients as they are especially vulnerable to traumatic experiences and continually exposed to such risks. Such treatments cannot assume that the patient already enjoys 'current safety and security' because this is not the case.

Putting recovery into practice: a commentary on 'What recovery means to us'
Article Abstract:
The concept of recovery in the field of mental health is controversial. It represents hope to patients, but also may discourage them from continuing with traditional treatment. This article provides a cautionary perspective of recovery by focusing on the need for well-run self-help programs and clear communication in therapeutic relationships.
