Effects of suppressing thoughts about body weight: a comparison of dieters and nondieters
Article Abstract:
Many dieters, although not becoming bulimic, are often preoccupied with food, weight and eating, relying on cognitive controls to regulate their eating habits. A study, designed to show the effects of suppressing weight-related thoughts, compares dieters and nondieters. The hypothesis that the suppression of thoughts about body weight contributes to the weight-related preoccupations of dieters is explored. The study shows that dieters think about body weight more frequently than nondieters but do not show the significant rebound exhibited by nondieters following thought suppression.
