Evolution and laboratory research on men's sexual arousal: what do the data show and how can we explain them?
Article Abstract:
The Thornhills' laboratory findings on male sexual arousal patterns can be manipulated in a number of ways and different interpretations be made of them. Most studies find that a high degree of violence inhibit men's sexual arousal compared with low level or no violence at all. Second, descriptions of women's disgust to the rape also inhibit male arousal. Female verbal nonconsent is found to have no effect at all to male arousal. This is in contrast to the Thornhills' rape adaptation hypothesis that the use of violence can facilitate coercive sex since, if there is male inhibition, then there should not be any arousal at all.

What if within-sex variation is greater than between-sex variation?
Article Abstract:
Thornhill and Thornhill's (T and T) research is accused of being sexist since it propagates sexual objectification of both men and women. The work is deficient in including socially relevant issues furthermore, the approach used affirms how women is socially controlled in Western culture. Thus, T and T's quest to understand human sexuality is deemed a failure. The main point discussed is how the research paradigm neglects to ask questions about variation in sexual behavior among the sexes. It is important that the ideal circumstances for copulating be established before hypotheses in function and adaptation is tested.
