Executive cognitive functioning and risk for substance abuse
Article Abstract:
Empirical evidence correlating deficient executive cognitive functioning to increased substance use disorder (SUD) risk was analyzed. A hypothetical etiological framework was utilized to carry out the analysis. Results indicated a number of risk factors for SUD. These include a difficult temperament and deviations in neurophysiological functioning. Findings also showed that boys at high risk for SUD have a temperament characterized by irritability, social withdrawal, negative emotionality, and hyperactivity.
