Familial and nonfamilial factors in the prediction of disruptive behaviors in boys at risk for substance abuse
Article Abstract:
Men who qualified for a lifetime diagnosis of psychoactive substance dependence disorder and who had a son between 10 to 12 years of age were asked to participate in a study which identified familial and nonfamilial factors contributing to the likelihood of antisocial behavior in boys at risk for substance abuse. Participants took several tests which measured psychological and psychiatric status, family and peer relationships and psychophysiological responses to information-processing tasks. Results showed that intra-family, home environments and neighborhood crime predispose prepubertal boys to substance abuse.

Seven-year follow-up of speech/language impaired and control children: psychiatric outcome
Article Abstract:
Children with speech/language impairment at five years of age show a higher rate of psychiatric disorders at 12.5 years, as compared to normal children, even when the concurrent psychiatric disorders are controlled for. However, the difference fails to reach the level of significance, and can be due to factors such as actual decrease in the rate of psychiatric disorders and differences in the methods used for diagnostic purposes. Language disorders are more likely to co-occur with psychiatric disorders at 12.5 years of age, as compared to speech disorders.
