John Holland: the near death of a frightened sailor: specific phobia and suicide-related behavior
Article Abstract:
John Holland, a young submariner, underwent a near-death experience after he took a bottle of acetaminophen with 500 mg tablets because of his sudden fear of underwater cruise. Although he had no psychiatric problems in the past, he committed a suicidal act because of the anxiety he experienced inside the submarine. HIs suicidal behavior could be attributed to the severe situational phobia he encountered when he joined the submarine corps. Such phobia had driven him to look for the most immediate means to escape his situation.

The case of Ellen West revisited: a permitted suicide
Article Abstract:
The case of Ellen West represents a milestone in suicide research, particularly since it involves the sensitive issue of euthanasia or physician-assisted death. The case study's relevance stems from the fact that the patient's suicide was rationalized to have been the best solution to what seemed like an incurable psychosis during that time. Also, the fact that this recommendation came from a noted psychiatrist seems even more alarming.

Diffusion of responsibility in the care of a difficult patient
Article Abstract:
The suicide case of an abstract expressionist painter Mark Rothko is studied to demonstrate how a patient's psychiatric makeup can divide his medical caretakers among themselves and hasten suicidal behavior. This behavior can also arise in other settings such as schools and hospitals. The behavior cited is most likely to occur among patients of forceful characters which are difficult to control.
