Listening to nicotine: negative affect and the smoking withdrawal conundrum
Article Abstract:
New treatment strategies for preventing smoking relapse could be developed if a wider view of withdrawal is taken into account to acknowledge its likely affective bases. Empirical research has demonstrated a strong connection between measures of negative affect and drug use, with smoking relapse research showing that there is a close link between negative affect and withdrawal symptomatology. Studies show that withdrawal symptoms have a highly idiosyncratic trajectory and negative affect fluctuations are reflected in withdrawal temporal dynamics.
